Then, in the climax of the story, in Batman #497, Bane faces a worn-out Batman and brutally defeats him. The iconic moment comes when Bane lifts Batman and breaks him over his knee, an image that became a staple in pop culture.
After this devastating attack, Bruce Wayne is forced to step away from the mantle of the Bat to recover. During his absence, he entrusts Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael, with the responsibility of taking on the role of Batman. Bruce’s recovery is a long and challenging process, involving therapy and the help of the mild healing abilities of his doctor, Dr. Shondra Kinsolving. Eventually, after rigorous training with the help of Lady Shiva, Bruce reclaims his role as Batman, confronting and disarming Jean-Paul Valley. He doesn't immediately resume his duties as Batman but asks Dick Grayson, the first Robin and now Nightwing, to temporarily take over while Bruce recovers.
